Mercedes-Benz continues to build the pinnacle of luxury SUVs with their GLE class. A soft leather interior sets the luxury-laden tone for the rest of the cabin. In the front, heat can be applied to nearly everything: the mirrors, seats, steering wheel, even the cupholders. Don't worry, in the case of a cold drink they can be cooled as well. The seats adjust in four ways and have three memory settings. Multiple drive modes are selected via touch controls on the center console, adjusting power to the wheels for various scenarios such as weather or sport driving. The rear seats feature two headrest DVD systems with RCA inputs for other media. Dual-zone climate is offered in the back seats via controls on the back of the console, where you can also select heated seat functions. This is the best example of a sport/luxury/practical SUV we have ever seen.
An aggressive growl welcomes you when you fire up the twin-turbo V8. Producing 577HP and 561lb-ft of torque, the available power is incredible for a 5,300lb SUV. It would seem the throttle is always happy to oblige, although it never feels like you're holding back a dog on a chain. The ride is as smooth as you'd expect out of a Mercedes-Benz and handling is that from a dream. It's almost as if the wheel knows where you plan on going before your direction.
